Rigorous enforcement of food hygiene legislation is important
but it is not, in itself, sufficient to prevent food poisoning.
Food poisoning is normally caused by negligence or ignorance
and consequently most experts in food hygiene believe that
a reduction in the high level of food poisoning cases will
only be achieved by the education of food handlers. The Chartered
Institute of Environmental Health has designed its Foundation
courses to give first tier workers an appreciation of the
fundamentals of good food hygiene practice.
The CIEH Foundation Certificate in Food Hygiene (formerly
the Basic Food Hygiene Certificate) is a first level course
incorporating fundamental food hygiene knowledge for all
food handlers. The programme covers a defined syllabus.
Candidates are assessed by objective tests of 30 multi-choice
questions.
Topics covered
- Food Poisoning
- Bacteriology
- Prevention of contamination and food poisoning
- Personal Hygiene
- Premises, Equipment and pest control
- Cleaning and disinfection
- Legislation (New 2006 regs and EEC directives plus
- Catering Guides)
- HACCP awareness
For Pest Control Staff we would look in detail at HACCP
with respect of Bait station / rodenticide safety as a
chemical contaminant and also record keeping.

Killgerm, the UK's leading provider of quality, value for
money pest control training courses, is currently expanding
the number and range of training courses it offers.
The first
new course is the 'RSPH and BPCA Level 2
Certificate in Pest Control'. The course has
been specifically designed so that it is held over a series
of four weeks on two simultaneous days to enable convenient
study for the working PCO. Furthermore, a series of
short assessments, held at the end of each of the four modules
will allow both students and tutors to monitor their progress,
and highlight areas that may need further guidance.
The course
fulfils the legal requirements for the training of pest control
technicians as envisaged by the Control of Pesticides Regulations
1986 and 1987. The syllabus covers the biology, behaviour,
and control of a full range of public health pests, health
and safety, legislation, customer care and also incorporates
a valuable practical element. This culminates in the Royal
Society for the Promotion of
Health (RSPH) examination, which, when successful will result
in the award of a professional qualification.
Completion of
the course will ensure technicians are
equipped to carry out their professional duties safely, efficiently
and humanely.
The RSPH examination is in three parts
and candidates must achieve a minimum of 50% in each part
to be awarded the certificate.

n the UK mosquitoes can create a distressing biting nuisance, which affects the well-being of local residents and which can pose a major economic problem in areas where tourism is a main source of income to the local community.
Experts agree that climate change will make the UK more vulnerable to the problems caused by mosquitoes. In response to this, the Royal Society for the Promotion of Health, working together with various pest management experts, has devised this definitive training course which covers the essential elements of an effective and safe mosquito control programme.
The course is for those, currently or potentially, involved in the control of mosquitoes in the UK. It will provide you with the in-depth knowledge and practical skills to enable you to:
- Identify key mosquitoes
- Survey areas for mosquito activity
- Carry out a range of targeted measures to reduce mosquito problems
For further information or to book a place on the course please contact Lisa Wales on 01924 268445 or email: lisa.wales@killgerm.com
